The statistics in these reports are supplied by the World Institute for Strategic Economic Research, (WISER), which compiles data supplied by the US Census Bureau, Foreign Trade Division. WISER statistics represent the value of exported products that originated in the state of Washington. Services, including software and architectural and engineering design, are not included in the data. WISER provides statistics using the Harmonized System (HS) of product classification. HS is an international system used to classify traded products for both tariff and statistical purposes. Individual product categories are represented by six-digit codes. Any country may append additional digits. The U.S. uses 10-digit HS codes for collecting merchandise trade data. Prior to 1999, WISER reports used Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, the four-digit economic classification system used to describe industries of the U.S. economy. SIC was replaced by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) in 1997. Because of the change in reporting systems, you may notice a discrepancy in the data. Under SIC reporting, WISER distributed the aggregate value of exports it could not attribute to any particular state over all fifty states. Under the HS format, this value is not distributed but is reflected in the category "Unknown State."
