| Position Profile
Each fall our program recruits research analysts to prepare fiscal notes during the legislative session. You will gain exposure to the legislative process and interact with a variety of state and local government officials, many of whom you will regularly rely on to provide data and insight for preparing fiscal notes on impacts from bills. Fiscal note analysts have gone on to a variety of positions with the Department of Community, Trade & Economic Development and other agencies, the legislature, and local governments.
Positions either participate in a variety of research or statistical analysis process (e.g., field data collection or research projects). May direct lower-level statistical or clerical staff.
Positions follow well-defined plans, methods and procedures and gather, compile, code, classify and analyze data in accordance with these plans and procedures. Works under the close supervision of a high level analyst or supervisor who reviews work for accuracy and completeness. This class is distinguished from lower-level positions by applying a basic knowledge of statistical reasoning and statistical procedures with corresponding responsibility for accuracy and completeness.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree, including one college-level course in statistics.
OR
Two years of experience as a Statistical Reports Compiler 3, Data Services Assistant 3, Data Compiler 2 or equivalent, and successful completion of at least one college level course each in statistics,mathematics or computer programming (technical level) and English composition.
Desirable Qualifications
Interested candidates should have:
- Experience working in public policy or have earned an advanced degree in the following: public administration, political science, criminal justice, public health, environmental sciences, accounting, law planning or a related field.
- Ability to read and comprehend complex legislative bills.
- Good phone communication, interviewing, and investigative skills.
- Strong analytical skills, showing proficiency in both math and writing.
- Completion of a course in college-level statistics.
- Ability to work under extremely tight deadlines and in a high-pressure environment.
- Knowledge of local government and/or legislative processes and issues.
- Experience with Excel and Outlook.
